The new generation of Formula 1 fans has been treated to some fantastic racing and viewing over the last few years. This year promises to be even more exciting, with young guns George Russell and Lando Norris making up the grid.
However, today we’ll be discussing some facts about Mercedes driver George Russell
- He was born in 1998
George William Russell was born on February 15, 1998 in King’s Lynn, United Kingdom. Russell is 13 years younger than his new teammate Hamilton, around the same age as the seven-time world champion was when he won his first title in 2008. Only time will find out if history will repeat itself.
- He was a karting champion at the age of 9

At age 7, he started karting. Two years later, he was an MSA British and British Open Champion. He followed that up by defending his title in 2010 using a Rotax Mini Max kart.
- GP3 series champion

He won the 2017 GP3 drivers’ title in his rookie season after taking four victories, three pole positions and five podium finishes in the season, and clinched the championship at the penultimate round in Jerez.
- Formula 2 Champion

Russell inched closer to Formula 1 after moving up to the faster Formula 2 series following his GP3 success in 2017, and drove for ART Grand Prix for 2018. He repeated the feat of winning the championship in his rookie season after having a season-long battle with current McLaren Formula One star Lando Norris.
- In 2019, Russell Joined F1

Mercedes paved the way for George Russell to finally reach Formula One, as the German manufacturer supplied engines to the Williams team. He made his Formula One Grand Prix debut in 2019, with Robert Kubica as his teammate. He finished his rookie season without scoring a single point, which was attributed to the lack of pace of the Williams FW42.
