Why F1 Drivers Wear Knee Pads

When you hear a Formula One car speeding towards you, there is a lot of noise. The sound is intense and very mechanical. The engines roar like rockets about to take off. So it’s no surprise that F1 drivers wear ear protectors and helmets. But why do they wear knee pads?

F1 drivers wear knee pads for the following reasons;

  • Knee pads are worn because they want to achieve maximum protection while driving a high-performance race car. While wearing a helmet, a race car driver has only one point of contact with the steering where l. F1 drivers wear knee pads because it protects their knee joints in the event of a crash, a bumpy road, or knocks against the car’s interior when traveling at high speeds and up to 5g’s. Knee pads can allow easier access to the car’s pedals, support when taking corners, and more comfortable seating.
  • It improves access to the pedals of the F1 car when taking corners at a few hundred miles per hour and absorbs some of the vibrations produced by the roaring engine of the F1 car. Knee pads also help to wedge the knees together, preventing them from moving about or knocking together to cause bodily harm or bruises. F1 drivers experience up to 5g’s acceleration, which can be detrimental to their knees (or any part of their body) which may bang together or against the car.
  • Knee pads keep the driver’s knees and legs stable for a more comfortable seating position and a better driving experience due to the compact cockpit size.

In conclusion, Formula 1 drivers have to be in top physical and mental condition for 22-23 races in a season. Some of the races are scheduled on successive weekends. It is not easy for drivers to get back in peak form from the ordeals of a race. That is the reason why drivers use all protective measures to guard their body and their lives. Using knee pads keeps the knees safe from the hits on the sides and front of the cockpit. Knee pads also brace the upper and lower legs.
