Immerse yourself in a world of underwater wonders, as an expedition far off the coast of Chile unearths a treasure trove of marine life, hidden beneath the Pacific. The Schmidt Ocean Institute has recently discovered an estimated 20 new species, nestled around several seamounts. From a spectral octopus to a mysterious sea urchin, this journey into the deep has revealed an aquatic realm teeming with life.

The expedition also managed to capture rare images of a unique squid and a creature that uncannily resembles the internet’s beloved ‘flying spaghetti monster’. These exceptional species were found thriving around a seamount taller than Mount Olympus. The researchers aboard the vessel Falkor (too) were also fortunate enough to spot an ethereal blue and white octopus, affectionately dubbed the ‘Casper octopus’.
This endeavor serves as a significant contribution to the ambitious international scientific project known as the Ocean Census. This initiative aims to discover 100,000 new marine species within the next decade, highlighting the immense biodiversity hidden beneath our planet’s waves. Currently, it is believed that about 5-10% of these species remain undiscovered.
The United Nations has ratified a treaty framework in 2023 that would allow for the designation of marine protected areas in international waters. This protection would safeguard the precious biodiversity discovered during such expeditions.
