Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu have both received a five-place grid penalty for the 2022 United States Grand Prix after taking their fifth internal combustion engine.
Perez, as well as teammate Max Verstappen, have taken their seventh of eight allocated exhausts. In contrast, George Russell and Alex Albon have taken their fourth of four allocated gearboxes and related components.
Stepping in for Kevin Magnussen, Haas’s Antonio Giovinazzi crashed early in FP1 and sat out the rest of the session with a damaged clutch – though it is not clear whether the team will fit a new gearbox to the car.
Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso have taken new engine components and will therefore receive grid penalties for the 2022 United States Grand Prix.
Leclerc is set to take a 10-place grid penalty in Austin as Ferrari has fitted to his F1-75 the sixth of three allocated internal combustion engines (ICE) and the sixth of three allocated turbochargers.
Alonso will be demoted five places on the grid at the Circuit of The Americas as Alpine has fitted to his car the sixth ICE. Along with the two-time champion, Sergio Perez and Zhou Guanyu will drop five places on the grid, having taken new ICEs on Friday.
Starting from Sunday’s US Grand Prix, the FIA will implement clarified rules on grid penalties, following confusion after nine drivers received sentences in Italy.
